This website aims to pull together the disparate elements of Alan Watson's writing. The constant underlying basis for his hobby is a continuing 20 year professional career as a Geotechnical Engineer writing technical reports on ground investigations.

Alan's first published work away from ground investigation appeared in The Crop Watcher in the mid 1990's after an interest in the crop circle mystery lead him to postulate about the Alton Barnes pictogram of 1990.

At this time Alan's interest in short story writing was also developing. Then a growing family reduced his available time and changes in circumstances in the late 1990's almost completely removed the scope for creativity. For a number of years Alan was in a wilderness. Then in 2005 he relocated to Wendover, Buckinghamshire, much nearer to his place of work. This released several hours each day, which he soon filled by re-igniting his writing hobby, spurred on in July 2006 when Ground Engineering Magazine published Alan's one-off 'Talking Point' column. alwritingzone.com is a personal website providing links to examples of Alan's writing.
Alan has provided links to other sites where his work is published. One such link is the New Civil Engineer magazine website NCE+ where his published letters to the editor can be found, along with antecedents and responses.

There are also a number of links to the helium.com writing and rating website where Alan has a number of articles, poems and short stories published and rated.

Alan hopes you enjoy his website. Be sure to send e-mail about what you think (or to contribute articles or ideas). He will be updating frequently, so check back often!

The primary division for this website is between Poetry & Prose and Non Fiction.

Alan's Non Fiction has included contributions to Ground Engineering Magazine since 2006 on the subject of Ground Investigation and Contamination Assessments.

The Crop Watcher published Alan's article 'Alton Barnes Decoded' in the 1990's at the height of the crop circle 'mystery' (although some might say this should appear on alwritingzone.com's Fiction pages!)

An essay with ideas about Carbon Management appears on the Helium website.

A good place to start is the Poetry and Prose page, where Alan's first published fiction is reproduced. 'Flight' has an environmental slant, juxtaposing personal financial struggle with global climate deterioration. This experimental prose was included in the Autumn 2006 edition (#138) of Orbis Quarterly International Literary Journal.
